Should a 10-Year-Old Play Travel Baseball?

Should a 10-year-old play travel baseball? For most families, no. Not because travel is evil and not because local ball is magic. At 10 the miles are usually a product, and the player is still being built in the yard. A jersey and a hotel can feel like progress when the actual progress is still catch, a net, and whether he wants to be out there.

If he is dominating 10U

Age up at home. A 10-year-old who owns 10U majors needs 11U or 12U, not a national circuit. That challenges him against kids who are physically more mature, and it gets him used to playing against older players, which is something he is going to have to do in high school anyway.

If he is not dominating, stay in the local league and put the extra hours into the yard, not the hotel. Ask after a month: is he a better thrower, runner, and hitter, or just more tired?
