The Truth About College Baseball Scholarships
Tad Reida
Families hear “scholarship” and picture football. Baseball doesn’t work like that. It’s an equivalency sport. A roster shares a small pile of athletic money.
Most college baseball players are on a piece of a scholarship, not a full ride. Some are on none. The ones who make it work often do it with academic aid, need-based aid, and a school that actually fits the family budget.
If a coach is offering playing time and a good education at a price you can live with, that is a real offer. Chasing a bigger athletic percentage at a place he won’t play — or can’t stay — is how people get bitter.
Ask what’s guaranteed. Ask what happens if he redshirts. Ask the four-year cost, not the first-year teaser. Write it down.
Your job is to keep the family honest about money before he falls in love with a hoodie.
