Academics Count in College Baseball Recruiting

Student-athlete is the name of the person your son wants to become. So many players don’t focus on academics until the academics are in a position to hurt them. Don’t be that family. Freshman and sophomore grades are the foundation. You cannot wait until the summer before senior year to care about a 2.4 and call that a plan.

College coaches read transcripts partly to see what kind of character and work ethic he has, and to ensure he will be eligible. A transcript is character on paper. The work he puts in during school shows what kind of character he has. He should want to succeed in all areas of his life.

Start looking at schools that fit him as a student as well as what majors he wants to study. Then look at the baseball. A great baseball fit at a school that doesn’t offer the major he is interested in is not a fit. Getting the degree is why your son is going to college.

Academic money is free money for kids who have good test scores and a good GPA. Ensure your son is in a position to earn extra money by holding him accountable to his grades.

A kid who can learn is a kid a coach can keep. Start the academic piece yesterday.
