Is Travel Baseball Worth the Money? What a Dad Should Watch

Travel baseball took over because people sold exposure and families got scared they’d miss the boat. Playing locally from 8 to 12 is good and necessary. 8U rings don’t show up on a college board. The hours spent working in the yard do.

Travel and club baseball isn’t the enemy. Chasing a college opportunity is a worthy goal. It’s also okay to choose Sunday’s off, vacation, and family time. A calendar with no backyard baseball, no rest, and without your son wanting to put in the work is the problem.

The miss is treating the organization name and the weekend schedule as the work. If he’s not getting better — and you two are always in the car fighting — the program isn’t developing him. It’s a product selling you a dream to make money.

Is travel baseball worth the money?

Ask a simple question after a month: is he a better thrower, runner, and hitter than he was, or just more tired? If you can’t answer that, travel baseball isn’t the plan. The plan is still in the backyard. Remember, this is a decade-long process. Not a one-month sprint.

For when the miles actually make sense, play local until he dominates, then age up, then scale the travel with his age.
